High-End One-Bedroom in Historic Schoolhouse

Lower Mills, an intriguing residential pocket of Dorchester that we’ve mentioned before, can offer some unique living experiences.  Like this beautifully finished one-bedroom in an historic schoolhouse building.  Its class, space, and personality alone make it an attractive find, but its highly walkable location completes the deal.

The Apartment

The finishes have been carefully chosen: real hardwood floors and cabinetry, top-of-the-line appliances, sleek countertops, and dark tiling in the bathroom.  The space is plentiful (800+ square feet), but it feels larger because of the massively high ceilings and huge windows.  All the necessities of luxury living are included: in-unit laundry, central air, and a walk-in closet.  Meant to be a condo, it’s comfortably insulated to reduce neighborly noise and give you as private a home as possible.

The Price

$1,450/month

The Up-Front Money

First month’s rent and just a $175, non-refundable move-in fee

The Building

When it came time for property developers to renovate this side of Lower Mills – around the corner from the Baker factories and nestled next to the Neponset River – an old schoolhouse building stood in their way.  Built in 1856 and recognized as an historic landmark, it couldn’t be knocked down.  So rather than destroy a piece of history, the developers embraced it and got creative, turning the schoolhouse into Lower Mills’ newest condo community.  Then, when the construction was complete two years ago, it was deemed more financially sound to convert the units into apartments.  But the personal touch in each unit and the conveniences of condo life (plenty of parking, on-site fitness center, wi-fi-ready club room) stayed the same.

The Location

Really, you can walk to everything.  A Shaw’s is right next door.   Dunkin’ Donuts is down the street, as well as a number of other cafes, shops, restaurants, and bars.  CVS, a health and spa center, and the Milton stop on the Red Line are just a five-minute stroll from your front door.  Walkscore rating: 80 out of 100.

Charming One-Bedroom Near Quincy Center

It’s condo-style living, but it’s yours to rent.  Located in an elegant building in Quincy’s Hospital Hill neighborhood, this one-bedroom condo is now available as an apartment.

So what makes it Deal-worthy?  Location, for one.  It’s right across from the Adams National Historic Park and tucked a block away from Burgin Parkway.  But its five-minute walk to Quincy Center might be its most attractive feature.

Old-fashioned charm and some simple conveniences – combined with a reasonable price, of course – complete the package.

The Apartment

The building’s marble entrance has a Manhattan feel to it: classic and clean, a nice buffer between the sounds of the city and the comfort of your home.  Up two flights of stairs is the apartment, a top-floor, corner unit.  Hardwood floors are in the foyer and living room (spacious, squared, and cable-ready), while tiles line the bathroom and kitchen (galley-style with granite counters and a dishwasher).  Two windows in the bedroom (dual closets and wall-to-wall carpeting) allow the sun to beam in from the north and the east.

A spot in the parking lot is included, but you can leave a car on the street and not have to worry.  Laundry and storage are in the basement.

The Location

A true contrast: one part urban, one part rural.  Look east and see Quincy Center less than a half-mile away.  You could go car-free without a problem (check out this property’s walkability score).  Look west and see the open greenery of Adams Park and the residential landscape that ascends Hospital Hill.  And in this part of Quincy, you’re always near the water and never far from the city.

The Price

$1,200/month with heat and hot water included.

The Up-Front Money

A $50 application fee and first and last month’s rent

Private and Spacious One-Bedroom in Quincy

Looking for a reasonably priced luxury apartment in a popular area (like Quincy) can be frustrating.  You want to stay within your budget, but you don’t want to sacrifice.  Getting into a great community for a low rate might mean settling for a tiny space or a first-floor unit – it might be cheaper, but it’s not for everyone.

This week’s deal is a surprising find.  It has space in abundance, considerable privacy, and you won’t have to break the bank to afford it.

The Apartment

Space is certainly the first thing you’ll notice.  It has 930 square feet in all (which is about 200 square feet more than average): an open kitchen (fully applianced) with a breakfast bar that overlooks a huge living room, vaulted ceilings, a bedroom that can easily fit a king with additional furniture, a luxurious bathroom with a garden-style soaking tub, and lots of closet space throughout.  There are full-size, side-by-side laundry machines set aside in a separate closet.  Lots of sunlight pours in through sliding doors that lead to a private balcony.  The apartment is on the top floor of the building and faces a natural backdrop – nothing but trees and quarry-rock.

The Price

$1,385/month.  And what’s comforting about that price is that it’s not based on concessions or special discounts.  It’s been lowered to adjust to the market, so when the time comes to renew your lease, that rate won’t jump through the ceiling.

The Up-Front Money

$50 application fee and a $500 security deposit with approved credit ($1,000 if your credit is a little low).

The Community

Great amenities: An outdoor pool with a hot tub, a 24-hour fitness center, and a club/billiards room that can be reserved by residents.  Parking is free outside (with plenty of spots for visitors) and garage parking underneath the building is available for a monthly fee.

The Location

It’s just down the street from the South Shore Plaza and right around the corner from the Braintree split (where you can access all the major highways: 93, 3, 128, and 95).  It’s also on an MBTA bus line that goes to the mall and the Quincy Adams T station.
